Yearly, Wattpad is producing praise-worthy writers, who inspire both readers and aspiring novelists. Hailey Allen is one of these said writers-- having able to write her Wattys 2014 winner novel, Playboy Rehab, which gained 8.3 million views with 195 thousand votes!
Playboy Rehab is about the publicist, Leslie King. And it just so happens that she should handle her boss' son the arrogant, selfish and unbelievably gorgeous, Sebastian Harrison--who has his mind set on partying until the day is gone and sleeping with as many women he pleases. Things start to turn up-side down as Lesley unravel that there's more to the Harrisons.
Well, I'm sure that Ms. Allen's success comes with hardwork and and perseverance. Let's take it from her:
What inspired you to write your novel?
For the original version, I was inspired by a lot of Romantic Comedies. I loved the idea of incorporating humor and love into one novel, and I've never really been someone who is too serious when it comes to writing. As for the rewritten version that I'm working on now, I knew that there was a lot that I wanted to say when it came to Harrison Inc. that I wasn't able to say in the original stories. The potential development for the characters I created just stayed with me until I was like, "Hailey, you know damn well their story isn't over." Haha.
What are the problems you have faced in writing your Playboy Rehab?
Definitely self-doubt; it's something I still deal with today. In writing, you tend to sometimes compare yourself and your writing to other authors. It isn't healthy, but it happens. And that same self doubt has created many set backs for me.
How were you able to promote your story?
At first, reads, votes and comments didn't matter to me as much as they do now. I just wrote to wrote; I had a crappy phone that I wrote chapters on. All my chapters were a haven for grammatical errors and plot holes (they still are, though haha). I would get two comments on each chapter and would be so happy about it. And eventually as I put more time into my writing, it showed to the rest of the community. I think not worrying about the notoriety helped in the promotion process because I wasn't out looking for anything. I just liked to write.
Hailey joined Wattpad on January of 2014 and I'm sure there could be reasons why she chose the site. Atop of that, how is she as a writer?
What made you join Wattpad?
I think I was just someone who had a lot to say and a lot on their mind--I still am. I looked up writing websites so I could find an outlet for my writing and came across Wattpad.
What are the perks of being a Wattpad writer?
The first thing that comes to mind is the comments. Reading how others around the WORLD react to your story is amazing. Most of the time it doesn't click in my brain that I have a platform of people from different countries, different cultures and different backgrounds reading something that I wrote. It's insane and overwhelming in a good way. Another perk would be influence. I've gotten messages from readers saying that my story helped them through a rough time or that I inspired them to start writing themselves. The moment you see that your works are having such an impact on people's lives; mere words on a screen that you conjured up yourself, that is when you realize how amazing it is to be a Wattpad author.
What set you apart from the other Wattpad writers out there?
I hold my readers at a very high regard; they come first, not only in writing but in everyday life. I can't tell you how many all nighters I have pulled to finish a chapter because of my readers and the demand (which I love). I try my hardest to connect with them no matter how big the family gets. And if they need me for anything personal I'll be there as best as I can, too. Even if I don't know them. I love talking to them, engaging with them. I just think it's important to remember the people that are the reason your writing is where it's at today on Wattpad.
What piece of advice can you give the aspiring writers out there?
Work to be a better writer than you were yesterday, not to be a better writer than writers out there today. If you create literature with this mentality, you will go very far.
"Stop relying on your past mistakes to shape your future ones... Fall in love, make a mistake, 'cause we're humans right? That's what we do."
